Boiler Breakdown? 7 Things to Check Before You Call an Engineer

There’s nothing worse than waking up to no heating or hot water — especially in the colder months. Before you panic or call an engineer, there are a few simple things you can safely check yourself. Here are seven steps homeowners in Torquay, Paignton and across South Devon can try first.

1. Check your thermostat

It sounds obvious, but thermostats can easily be knocked or set too low. Make sure your thermostat is turned up and the display is working. If it’s battery-powered, try replacing the batteries.

2. Check the timer or programmer

Power cuts or daylight savings can sometimes reset your boiler’s timer. Confirm that your heating schedule is correct and that it hasn’t been accidentally switched to “off.”

3. Check your boiler pressure

Most boilers should sit around 1 to 1.5 bar when cold. If it’s lower, you may need to top up the pressure using the filling loop — usually a small silver flexi pipe under the boiler. If you’re unsure, refer to your manual or give us a call.

4. Look for error or fault codes

Modern boilers display codes when something goes wrong. Check your user manual for what the code means — some issues can be reset, while others need professional attention.

5. Try resetting the boiler

If your boiler has locked out, a simple reset can sometimes clear minor faults. Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions carefully.

6. Check radiators for air

If your boiler is running but some radiators are cold, they may need bleeding. This releases trapped air so hot water can circulate properly.

7. Check for power supply

Make sure your boiler’s fuse hasn’t tripped and that nearby switches are turned on. It’s a simple check that can save a call-out.

When to call an engineer

If you smell gas, notice leaks, or your boiler keeps shutting down after checks, stop and contact a Gas Safe registered engineer. Never attempt to remove covers or repair internal parts yourself.
